Société Française de Médecine Vasculaire, (French Vascular Medicine Society)

The Société Française de Médecine Vasculaire (S.F.M.V.), is a non-profit-making association, created in 2002 by the merger of the Société d'Angiologie de Langue Française (SALF), (French society of angiology), a scientific society and the Association Française de Formation Continue en Angiologie, (AFFCA), (French association of continuing education in angiology).

It currently rounds up the largest number of vascular physicians from the public and private sectors. As at 2011, the S.F.M.V. has 1,816 members.

The SFMV is dedicated to the development of Vascular Medicine on the scientific, educational and quality of care fronts. Its objectives take on the form of initiatives in different fields including in particular :

  • Publication of the guidelines in force
  • Training and Continuing Medical Education: the work on Continuing Medical Education (CME), Assessment of Professional Practices, Recommendations and Guidelines for Practice are published and distributed under the guidance of the professional associations (Unions, CME Associations) and Learned Societies. The regional vascular medicine associations (ARMV) are the natural relays for this.
  • Transfer of vascular medicine knowledge to the other healthcare professionals (widespread distribution of the results of scientific and educational data, good clinical practices, investigations, workshops, etc), the patients (screening campaigns for the general public) and the public.

The SFMV organises its annual congress in September and also takes part in other events (Congress of the French College of Vascular Disease, French Society of Cardiology, etc).

It works in close liaison with the other stakeholders of the vascular world (Association pour la Promotion de l'Angiologie Hospitalière (APAH), (Association for the Promotion of Hospital Angiology), the Collège Français de Pathologie Vasculaire (CFPV), (French College of Vascular Disease), the Collège des Enseignants de Médecine Vasculaire (CEMV) (College of Vascular Medicine Teachers), the French Societies of Phlebology (SFP), etc) in particular the Drug Industry thanks to whom all the Vascular Medicine initiatives, including the congresses are made possible.

The SFMV members also come together on a regional level in independent regional associations (ARMV). The SFMV monitors the scientific quality of all the initiatives performed on a national scale and offers scientific and educational support to the regions requesting this.

Finally, the SFMV has initiated several trials overseen by its Scientific Council.
